ICAPS/IET and Bridge Learning Communities

To support the FY21 ICCB IET grant recipients and to fulfill the mission of the Transitions Academy, we are excited to announce the formation of an Illinois ICAPS/IET Learning Community and a Bridge Learning Community.  All programs are invited to be a part of either of these learning communities to share information, ask questions, and earn from one another.  All ICCB IET grant recipients for FY21 are required to be a part of the ICAPS/IET group.

Details of the learning communities:

• ICAPS/IETs meets second Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm (CST)

• Bridge meets third Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm (CST)

• Meetings begin in January 2021 and run through July 2021

• Format will vary each month and will include directed discussions with guiding questions and presentations from experienced ICAPS programs

 It's full of information on the latest resources and reports from Illinois transitions as well as the latest from our partners around the country. Thanks to the many individuals who contributed to this edition and to all of you making smooth transitions a reality for those we serve!

 

Designing for Equity and Access for ALL Learners

To best reflect current research and needs of our learners, beginning fall 2020, training will be available to all Illinois Adult Education teachers in Designing for Equity and Access for ALL Learners. This training, formerly known as Special Learning Needs, will be part of the Instructional Staff Professional Pathways already in place.

The Southern Illinois Professional Development Center in collaboration with the Illinois Community College Board and the Adult Education Professional Development Network is excited to announce this transformation.

Special Learning Needs training has been in place in Illinois since 1999 and has undergone multiple modifications to reflect new research, progression in technology, and the evolving needs of our students. This current transformation provides a rebranding of the training to reflect our need to ensure equity and access. As a part of the push for equity, infusion of Universal Design for Learning will be emphasized in the training. Some of the key components of the original SLN training will remain, including effective instructional practices and designing instruction with learner needs in mind.

All Standards Proficient credentialed instructors will see connections to their
already-completed training. Participants will be encouraged to build on their prior knowledge and completed work in Standards Proficient training.

Training opportunities include:

Foundations of Designing for Equity and Access for ALL Learners (asynchronous and synchronous online sessions with opportunities for application exercises with students – 9 hours of professional development)

Institute for Designing for Equity and Access for ALL Learners (asynchronous and synchronous online sessions with opportunities for application exercises with students – 15 hours of professional development and resulting in a credential of Specialist in Equity)

Update for Prior Completers of the Institute to Credential Special Learning Needs Resource Specialists (asynchronous and synchronous online sessions with opportunities for application exercises with students – 5 hours of professional development) For the many prior completers of the former training, an update training will be provided to allow them to refresh their training and earn the new credential.

Moraine Valley Community College
Remote Support Services

 

One idea for remote support services we are implementing at Moraine Valley is a Peer Tech Support Team. Since the Fall 2020 semester is going to feature significant online instruction, we have a team of 2 instructors and 2 specialists who are available for technical support with Canvas, Zoom, Webex, and contacting students via the internet. We divided the instructors into 4 groups and each group has a specific person (team leader) to contact for tech help. So far, the Peer Tech Support Team is working well for our ESL and HSE instructors!

Meet Guillermo, Jasmine, Caroline, Jonathan and Aniella – five students on the spectrum take us on campus and into their lives to see how they’re doing college. Every fall, more and more students on the spectrum who are capable of academic work at the college level go off to college.   Getting in is often easy enough, but navigating college on the spectrum can be challenging in many ways. Students are figuring it out by doing it. From deciding which school will be the best fit, to interactions with professors and peers, facing roommate situations, handling money, homesickness, finding work, overcoming setbacks, staying on track to graduate– these students come up against aspects of college life students typically encounter.   Autism Goes to College is a first of its kind film, packed with honest insights for student, parents and educators offering an eye-opening look at what a growing number of neurodiverse students are bringing to campus.

The Southern Illinois Professional Development Center is searching for new or newer Career Navigators who would like a mentor. Experienced Career Navigators working to earn their Career Navigator Specialist credential need to mentor a newer individual as part of their credential process. Contact SIPDC Trainer at sipdctrainer@gmail.com to request a mentor. Mentors and mentees can meet remotely sharing resources, materials, answering questions, and providing professional support.
